So I go to our grubby little Chinese take away today as I attempt to stay on my 'no-carb' diet. This diet really puts me through the ringer and sometimes out of desperation I need a 'taste' of something that resembles real food instead of having to suffer tuna on cucumber slices. Because I am on no-carb it certainly doesn't mean I am remotely interested in anything that might be healthy.
Anyway whilst ordering ribs, beef and beansprouts and a portion of chicken and veggies, my eye was drawn to a glossy looking magazine on the counter titled 'Asian Restaurant Guide'. On the front cover was a picture of the outside of the take-away I was standing in. Given that they had given me an ETA of 10 minute on my food (which on most normal watches always supercedes 20 no matter how quiet they are) I thought i'd take a look at the article which had got them delivered to such a prominent place in the magazine.
Before I continue, I want to say I have regularly been disappointed with what is classed as Chinese food in America. Over-battered, oversalted and bland, being the consistencey of mediocricy that these places seem to fall within. Our local take-away being no exception and never bucking the trend unless it's been downward, hence why I was intrigued how they had made there way onto the front of this 'industry magazine'. Had they paid there way in, who knows ? But I thought why out of all the crappy take-outs, in all of America, how had this one got such coverage.
As I opened the magazine I was greeted by a photo of one of their tables. Not the food-stained, scratched up, made of some cheap plastic disguised as wood type material that was sitting there in front of my very eyes, but instead a beautiful velvet red tableclothed structure, which had an imitation 'direct from Beijing' Golden Dragon sitting on it, whilst carrying two bottles of Soy Sauce and handcarved chopsticks. Furthermore on the table were two trendy black plates sitting there that looked like they belonged in the Ideal Homes Exhibition. My first take was that they had just lifted a picture from a posh Chinese restaurants website, however on closer inspection I noticed that the tables adjoining 'bench' was indeed the one from the restaurant, but instead of lookig like a bench that had regularly supported the weight of 30 pound plus people over the last 20 years. These benches were perfectly upright, and dare say it, looked inviting enough that you would say to your family, let's go for a meal there. However knowing that the normal procedure is sitting on crap, eating with packaged chopsticks or plastic forks from a paper plate, that this was just to create a little 'homely' illision. The place only has two tables so everyone knows it's not a restaurant and just a seedy little takeaway serving bad food to desperate tubbies like myself.
However as I read on, not only was this place presenting itself as a restaurant, it had the audacity to start suggesting they had a superior selection of foods over other establishments due to it's chef's special sauces etc. More pictures showed 'dishes' that had been cooked by the chef that had nothing to do with the sloop they had been serving me the last 6 years. This look like it had come from General Tso's kitchen itself. I am all for a bit of creative marketing but this was taking the piss. I would have preferred them to say, "look we ain't got anything on anyone else, we use the same wholesalers to buy our low quality, frozen meats and fish. Our chef's order our special sauces by the gallon but bear in mind that these sauces may come direct from China so if paint-thinner's your thing, we're the place to be".
I guess my point is this. No matter how muc lipstick you put on a pig, it's still a pig. There is nothing wrong with being low grade, low quality. Some of the best greasy-spoon's I have ever eaten in have been the dirtiest mostdigusting places on earth. Places where health inspectors fear to tread, but the moment you see the building, you know what your getting into. I prefer that honestly than pretending to be something your not. When our local chinese takeaway tries to promote itself as a fine dining experience ,when it's anything but, it makes me realize that it just takes a few selective pictures to make Mark Nash into Brad Pitt or water into wine. I am going to tuck into my, organically flavoured, slowly baked over several hours, hand selected spare ribs personally chosen by the chef himself for my pleasure.............................. bon appetit

Mambo Number 5....
Well not quite. Following on from my points yesterday about the failures of the Bush Administration, one did slip my mind. I guess when you have so many weapons-graded screw-up's to consider, it is only natural some get forgotten.
5/ Torture under the Bush Administration.
I guess in part I bring this up as this morning we force-fed another Joe Scarborough "if I shout louder it means I am right" episode. On this particular show, an obscure journalist had written a piece on Obama basically reversing some of the Bush policies on how to treat prisioners of the War on Terror. This journalist went on to say that if another terrorist attack on America happened, then Obama would be to blame as he had relaxed the interegation of prisioners (actually it has been proven that torture gets little or no information from anyone captured).
Obviously this was food and drink to our Joe. Who climbed upon his soap-box to tell us all that if it had not been for the torture of prisioners, then New York would have disappeared under a mushroom cloud. Give me a break Joe. The Bush lie machine used this tactic to win the election in 04. By 05 everyone knew it was this sort of scaremongering which was being used to fool people to believing they were going to die any day. "Fear and Consuption" is the name of this tactic.
Lest we also forget that the first attack took place when Bush was in office, so heaven forbid if this was to happen again, we have to blame Obama, but not Bush because he was more interested in reading "My pet goat" instead of the CIA report put in front of him a month before ?
I am hoping we do see a trial for Bush/Cheney and Rumsfield. They were not "saving" America as they claim, they were creating the next enemy. Feeding our fear and worries, letting people like Scarborough and Bill O'Reilly be their mouthpiece and telling us "how it is". This is our 'independent' news here apparantly. I can't ever imagine these types of imbeciles being allowed to host their own show on the BBC. At best they would get the 4am slot at Radio Norwich.
The pictures from Abu Grahib were bad enough for America. No doubt the stories of the men 'held without trial' at Gitmo will bear fruit over the next few years. Don't get me wrong, if they were fighting us defendig their homeland, we have to remove them from the battlefield. However then they have to be given POW status at the very least. It is how we ensure we don't let our own government get out of hand. Sadly they were allowed too, and with that, they bought America shame and tens of thousands of new enemies. Although for Mr Cheney and Co. I am sure it will all be worth their while :-(

America finds herself again
Well I wake up this morning in a country and a world finally free of George Bush, his entourage and the tyranny they emposed on us all.
Fantasists still claim that the "Bush Legacy" will be seen as a succesful one in time and will have it's place in history. You see most of these 'experts' on television everyday still throwing their body across the worst administration in history and speaking to their audience like uneducated children.
Interestingly enough, these buffons were complaining last night about George Bush being roundly booed by the millions at the Inauguration, yet when the hate rallies of the Republican party were shown, with Obama being branded a 'terrorist', the same individuals complained that this negative coverage dominating the news was helping Obama. So I say to them same people that maybe this 'booing' could help Bush's profile ?
Four things stick out for me about the Bush legacy. I'll even give him the benefit of the doubt and actually pretend he won Florida fair and square. This is how I feel history will portray him.
1) August 2001 - CIA hands Bush/Rice report titled "Bin Laden determined to strike at US", to which Bush replies to the operative "at least you have covered your ass". Was the report even read ? One month later America suffers it's worst attack since Pearl Harbor carried out by Muslim extremists from Saudi Arabia.
2) Sept 2001-2003 - Bush declares war on Terrorists. Over the course of 2 years, this war-drum beats towards Iraq and away from Bin Laden, Afganistan and the biggest culprit of all for the September 11 attacks Saudi Arabia. I
Iraq has no proven links with Al Quada or Osama Bin Laden. Iraq does not have Weapons of Mass Destruction. Iraq did not train or have any nationals involved in September 11th attacks. To date, over 4,ooo American and Allied troops have been lost and thousands more wounded. Iraq has lost close to 100,000 citizens who have lost their life during the occupation. America is currently spending $10 Billion dollars a month and has already spent $1 Trillion dollars there.
3) 2005 - Hurricane Katrina - Disaster along the Gulf Coast sees a city underwater, thousands dead and a death toll going into four figures. Aid does not arrive for days. America sees shocking news footage of people pleading for help. Bush praises the head of FEMA, the man responsible for doing nothing in the wake of their disaster. To date, still thousands upon thousands living in hotels/trailers.
4) 2008 - Financial Collapse - Corporate greed and unregulated financial practices see American economy collapse into an abyss. Warning signs ignored, huge companies offered tax breaks and financial incentives to major share-holders to ship jobs overseas. Car industry, which directly and indirectly employs over 3 million people on verge on bankrupcy, cannot get $20 Billion dollars of Government aid. Huge Bailout over $800 Billion awarded to financial institutions including AIG. CEO's still enjoy inflated salaries and bonuses despite economic hardship.
I am no expert, I am not on any 'straight-talk' TV shows paid lots of money to give my 'opinion'. However I do understand that when something is so rotten to the core, it should be pointed out and people should hold their hands up and say "I can't defend this guy anymore". Despite Bush not being with us, his 'legacy' will live on as people try to get jobs and feed their families. As we try to improve our schools, hospitals and infrastructure, I am sure we will be told that there is not enough money, we spent it all in Iraq. Yes Mr Bush and the very few supporters you have left, you have left us with a broken country and some broken hearts, but rest-assured, we'll make sure the history books know who is to really blame.
Apparantly Bush had a "Leaving Office Party" with close colleagues and friends who were chanting "Four more years" as he entered the room. I can only assume that sarcasm really does live and breathe in America ;-)

Where did it all go wrong ?
As the US Economy reaches it's lowest point. One can't help by wonder why this great country, with so much wealth and expertize should get it so wrong. I am not just talking about the last 5 years, or even the length of the Bush Administration, which it must be said, is the most disasterous precidency in the history of mankind.
However beyond the Bush years there is a deeper legacy. I guess working in the electronics sector for so long, we could all see it coming. Even in the mid-ninties, after visiting a contract manufacturer who had decided to move their facilities into China, we all used to ask, how many more ?
Well the question is alot more. I read somewhere that if the Big 3 Auto companies go under, the percentage of jobs in the manufacturing sector will drop below 10% of the entire work-force in it's history. In 1985, manufacturing employed over 30% of the workforce.
I can only think greed played the biggest part in all this. Major shareholders realizing that by upping sticks and setting up in one of these low-cost labour countries, would ensure they could employ three times the workforce for about a third of the price. Great if your a shareholder, not if you are one of the tens of thousands of employees. Obviously this process was accelerated further in the unregulated Bush years of "more you earm, less you pay" taxing policies. Which effectively said ship jobs oversees and you will make more money. Huge manufacturing companies leapt at the chance, and with GPS being made in Taiwan, X Boxes, Playstations, Stereo's, TV's, iPod's, etc, etc all being made in China, it's all starting to make sense.
Sadly though for every "apple" ipod made in China, you can guarantee that someone there is making a 'lemon' version. By putting all our technology and production there, we have also allowed the market to become saturated with counterfeiters and low quality merchandice. We have kidded ourselves into accepting that a 'computer' has a lifespan of 5/7 years. As consumers, we have pushed down prices and also compromised on quality. If it doesn't work, throw it away and buy a new one. When I was a kid if it broke, then I didn't get another one. Not only did it ensure I took a little more conscious of it's well-being, but also ensured I understood that this was valuable and needed to be taken care of.
In short, I am not sure where we go from here. Can we stop the tax breaks and incentives to move out of the US and Europe and into China or India. Can we break this cycle of the wealthy moving our jobs around the world in the search of even greater profits ?
If everyone said tomorrow that they would not purchase another DVD player, computer or ipod that had been manufactured in China, do you think the likes of Sony, Dell or Apple would continue to allow their products to be made there ? If we want to be a strong market player, then we have to manufacture like one and choose quality over quantity.

Gave Thanks, next stop Christmas !!!
What a cracking Thanksgiving that was. Plenty of quality family time, loads of over-indulgance without guilt and some footy at the end to let it all out !!!
The great thing about this time of year is you get all the good things of Christmas but without the pressure and hype of the shopping for presents. How much am I going to spend ? Can I get the wife something she hasn't already got or pointed out she doesn't like ? Can I squeeze in a couple of crafty gifts for myself ? Then spending Christmas Day seeing everything you have bought being advertized at half-price in a post-christmas day store sale.
Give me a Christmas like Thanksgiving and i'll be a happy man every year !!! Indeed William and Anna's "Mr Turkey" song was a joy to behold !!!
However it is out the way and Christmas is almost upon us. The radio full of Xmas hits, the lights going up and the fireplace on everynight. Well actually sort of on, the wood's damp and isn't really giving me the fire I want, i.e. a Bing Crosby Christmas movie fire, you know, one that looks like it heats the whole house rather than just heating the whole fire place. I will go on a crusade this week and get some wood inside so we can start getting some real Christmas cheer :-)
I read with huge enjoyment the story of a "Mystical Christmas Wonderland" in the New Forest, which punters paid 30 quid each to take there brethen to a fabulous and 'unforgetable' Xmas experience with 'Lapland' type scenery. On arrival they were greeted with a muddy car pack, 4 hour queue's, one sick reindeer, a couple of sheep, cheap background and props, an unopened, non-working skating rink and of course by then an empty wallet.
Reports of staff being beaten up, Santa 'caught' smoking by a group of kids behind a wooden hut (nothing like throwing in health and safety issues alongside shattering the dreams of a small child all in one sitting) only add to the comedy value. Don't get me wrong, i'd have been pretty PO'd if i'd spent that sort of cash, but actually hitting the staff ? Come on, although that 'Santa' may have got a mouthful !!!
Christmas, doesn't it always bring out the best in people ? :-)

24 finally gives us some hope....
After being turned off by main stream TV the last couple of years, when the writers strike forced many shows to cut corners and squeeze in realistic storylines into impossible time-frames. It was nice to actually sit down and look forward to a return of one of the old favourites. Namely 24 starring Kiefer "make mine a double" Sutherland.
This time the writers had sensibly started with the idea of the story being set outside Los Angeles (I mean how many near-catastrophic disasters can one city take ?). We pick the story up in a small central African nation. Were Jack seems to be living out his tormented days helping in and around a school for orphaned children. However with cival war just around the corner, Jack is undissapointingly 'forced' out of retirement, as some of the boys from the score are captured/killed by a rebal group trying to force them into joining their illegal armies.
One could not help notice a few similarities to events in the film 'Hotel Rwanda'. With a similar voiced villian and machetes being brandished at any opportunity. However it set the tone nicely and as Jack and his mate (played by Robert Carlyle) tried desperately to get the boys to the American embassy, which was being evacuated.
However on arrival Jack was 'forced' into handing over himself to the authorities in exchange for safe-passage of the boys also. With Jon Voight and company seeming to be playing a sinister element of government which is actually funding and supporting the rebels. All is set-up for a well-paced and gripping 24 which starts in 2008.
Let's hope it can live up to the excellent first show :-)

My final word (I hope).....
As the 'Baby P' story continues to unravel itself on a daily basis, the harder I find it to withdraw myself from it. Seeing newspapers and message boards filled with sadness, remorse and at times hate and anger towards the perpetrators does nothing to answer the real question 'why ?'
Myself I cannot answer that or even begin to understand the logic behind this. Having two beautiful children, who I love and cherish with all my heart, makes it all that harder. However in a hope that I can release the sad feelings that currently consume me regarding this at the moment. I put this poem together for Peter in the hope it will make me realize the value of my own children that little more and that I can be a better Dad as well.
My poem is called "I bet you never knew"
I bet you never knew......that you'd grab a nation's heart.
I bet you never knew, you'd have a brand new start.
Where there's no monsters or nothing to fear, just happy playtime and lots of cheer.Running around and playing each day, never having to remember your life the old way.
Laughing and smiling and having lots of fun, for Peter my boy, you were a fine son.
Everyone's loss is now heavens gain, deep in our hearts we now all feel your pain. But you done nothing wrong, you have none of the blame.
We all love your face and your little smile, it will be here in our soul for a very long while.
So as your now upstairs looking down on us all, we will promise you this, we will walk tall. Never again will we let these words be said "we failed a child and now he is dead".
You have inspired us all to be that bit stronger and we will put up with this for no minute longer.
We promise you Peter this won't be in vain, and one day in heaven we'll all meet again.
Your million new friends and just little you, I bet you never ever knew.......
